Growing Networks: Detours, Stunts and Spillovers

چکیده
This paper describes the open-ended, exploratory and evolutionary development of a communication infrastructure, through an empirical case study of the introduction and utilisation of telemedicine technology in a hospital department. Developing and using a communication infrastructure necessarily require partners, and in order to enrol the partners and build a network, detours were necessary. In the case the detours mainly consisted of staging individual transmission events (“stunts”) in cooperation with prospective partners. These stunts provided a concrete opportunity for cooperation, and although the stunts were singular and specific, knowledge and experience from these events also had general value (spillover). Thus, far from being just a secondary and non-productive activity, the stunts provided the core learning situations in the exploratory development project.

Characterizing International BGP Detours
There are currently no requirements (technical or otherwise) that BGP paths must be contained within national boundaries. Indeed, some paths experience international detours, i.e., originate in one country, cross international boundaries and return to the same country. In most cases these are sensible traffic engineering or peering decisions at ISPs that serve multiple countries. In some cases ...
متن کاملIt?s a Small(er) World: The Role of Geography and Networks in Biotechnology Innovation
Using patent citation data for the U.S., we test whether knowledge spillovers in biotechnology are sensitive to distance. Controlling for self-citation by inventor, assignee and examiner, cohort-based regression analysis shows that spillovers are local but that distance is becoming less important with time. Network analysis paints a picture of a stable network between states, but a changing env...
متن کاملData Transfer Nodes for Cloud - Storage Providers
We provide a case study of current inefficiencies in how traffic to well-known cloud-storage providers (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive) can vary significantly in throughput (e.g., a factor of 5 or more) depending on the location of the source and sink of the data. Our case study supplements previous work on resilient overlay networks (RON) and other related ideas. These ineffic...
متن کاملCollaboration networks as carriers of knowledge spillovers: Evidence from EU27 regions
The geography of innovation traditionally concentrates on localised knowledge spillovers, yet neglects collaboration networks as a means to access knowledge outside the region. Using publication and patent data for 1316 regions in the EU27 plus Norway and Switzerland, we find that both localised knowledge spillovers and the knowledge spillovers stemming from collaboration affect the innovative ...
متن کاملQueue spillovers in city street networks with signal-controlled intersections
Quick and reliable estimation of traffic conditions is of critical importance for advanced traffic management systems, especially when heavy congestion occurs. This paper proposes a methodology to predict queue spillovers in city street networks with signalized intersections using data from loop detectors (counts and occupancy). The key idea of the developed methodology is that when spillovers ...
